The Allied Healthcare Centre - September 2011 Hermanus Newsletter

The Allied Healthcare Centre consists of a complementary mix of practitioners offering natural and non-invasive forms of healthcare. The team is made up of Chiropractor Dr Chad Gordon, Claudie Lemoine who is a Nutritional consultant and practices Deep Tissue Massage, Karen Lewis-Thomas who is a natural health practitioner, Ivan Kruger who owns Orthostride and the person in charge of the administration, Annatjie van Graan.

Dr Chad Gordon is a well-respected chiropractor in Hermanus and I have received a number of glowing reports from his patients, including my husband who has been treated by him for back spasms a couple of times. According to Dr Gordon– "Chiropractic is a healthy natural alternative to treating pain and spinal dysfunction through the adjustment of misaligned vertebrae. If spinal vertebrae are misaligned they can pinch and interfere with the nerves and influence the functioning of our nervous system, hence a healthy spine will lead to a healthy well-functioning body."

Claudie Lemoine is a Nutritional consultant specializing in educational nutrition, weight control, stress management and diagnosing allergies. She discusses food requirements for her patients and helps them to understand their own body’s needs and gives them the necessary advice to adapt their lifestyle in order to achieve health and wellbeing.

Claudie also practices deep tissue massage which is a therapy often done in conjunction with a chiropractor. She explains that "with digito-ressure techniques the removal of painful build-up in the muscles are removed." Deep tissue massage concentrates on the muscles and nervous system and removes the acidity that builds up causing aches and pains. Not only do the results include increased flexibility but it also opens the sinuses improving a number of other ailments.

Karen Lewis -Thomas's practice is new in Hermanus and a welcomed addition to the Allied Healthcare Centre.

Naturopathic training in South Africa consists of a double degree, starting with a 3 year Bachelor of Science degree in Complementary medicine and followed by an additional 2 year fulltime training programme that results in a Bachelor degree in Naturopathy.

A naturopath is a family care physician that combines a number of disciplines, including nutrition, homeopathy, acupuncture, counselling etc. to apply a holistic approach to diagnosing disease and stimulating the body’s own inherent healing capacity to achieve optimum health.

I was impressed with how thorough my first session was with Karen, she gets a full history of health, lifestyle and diet. I have taken my 1 year old daughter and 4 year old son to her with excellent results and a feeling of satisfaction that only natural medicines were used to heal their ailments.

The last part of the Allied Healthcare Centre is Ivan Kruger's business Orthostride which manufactures and supplies prosthetics and orthotics. They also sell, repair and hire out wheelchairs, crutches and walking aids.

The Allied Healthcare Centre is at 59 Church Street in Hermanus – tel - (028) 313 0878
