Anything Hermanus News Letter

February 2011 Hermanus Newsletter

As 2011 clicks into full gear and the warmest summer weather engulfs our beautiful town we let you in on a few culinary gems and chat conservation. If you would like to advertise in our newsletter or on our web site or list an event or your business, let us know.

Café on Main
The unassuming entrance of the Café on Main does not prepare you for what awaits inside – beautifully designed and trendy yet informal and fun - it is a take away restaurant with a difference! The high ceiling and exposed trusses create a great feeling of space and the extra long bamboo benches are simple but exquisite inviting you to sit down and eat there rather than opting for the take away option.

The owners, Barend and Mechelle Olivier are not newcomers to the restaurant industry – they have had years of experience locally and overseas. Their fish restaurant and take away shop in Onrus, The Fish Express has a reputation for good quality, delicious and affordable seafood. Barend had a vision 5 years ago to introduce an upmarket, trendy take away restaurant next to the Engen garage and through tenacity and patience he has finally created his unique take away concept.

Whale Coast FM 96 FM The rhythm of the Overstrand
Hermanuspietersfontein Food & Wine Market
Saturday morning. 10h15. We stroll into the HPF Saturday market, entire family in tow. The sun is beating down and you sense that it going to be one of those searingly hot days. We’re grateful to find a shady table and no sooner have we made ourselves comfortable than our 2 young boys are off – dipping into their allowance to buy a pancake each and then straight to the water feature that doubles as the kids entertainment area.

I order 2 cups of fantastic organic coffee, brewed while you wait, before snaking my way through the plethora of tasty nibbles and tantalising treats. After stocking up on a few things for lunch and I am drawn to the cheese and cold meats stall. A few too-tough-to-remember-the-name-of-cheeses...

Overstrand Conservation Foundation
The Overstrand Conservation Foundation (OCF) ended 2010 on a high. On the one hand we celebrated the outstanding success achieved by the 21 schools that participated in our WWF/WESSA Eco-Schools node. On the other, we are excited about the way our iKamva Letu Zwelihle (Our Future Zwelihle) project is coming together.

At the end of our 4th year as the recognised Eco-Schools node coordinator for the Overberg area, all 21 of the schools we have been working with achieved the level of certification for which they were aiming. This makes the node both the largest in the Western Cape and one of the most successful in the country...

Sandford Organic Cheeses
If you live in Hermanus you must have come across the Sandford Farm Cheeses, and once you've tasted them and discovered how healthy they are, you'll be hooked!

Sandford Farm is owned by the Newton Johnson family and is adjacent to their wine estate in the Hemel and Aarde valley. Felicity Johnson started making cheese as a hobby, but in 2008 she approached Dean Leppan and Pauline de Bruyn and asked them to try to make a business out of the dairy. With no previous experience but self motivation and an eagerness to learn they took up the challenge...

Ou Meul Bakkery
The old Rawson office in town has been transformed into a typical "boere bakery", Ou Meul!

They have been in Riviersonderend since 1988 and decided to expand their successful business by opening a branch in Hermanus.

Pop in and try their delicious pies, sweet desserts, pastries and biscuits for an old fashioned true South African treat.
