Anything Hermanus News Letter

January 2010 Hermanus Newsletter

Wishing all our readers a prosperous 2010! With so much to look forward to in 2010 and having had a memorable December 09 in Hermanus it is with great pride that we send out our January Hermanus Newsletter. We are always looking for positive news and stories about Hermanus and surrounds and if you have something newsworthy or events that you would like to get out to the world please let us know.

Hermanus through the eyes of a tourist

As is the case when living in Hermanus, one often has visitors in the Holidays – and who can blame them – Hermanus is a destination of unrivalled beauty and family packed fun! We had a few guests this December, and it was magical to experience Hermanus through the eyes of a visitor once again as we joyfully reaffirmed all the reasons that inspired us to choose Hermanus as a place to live in the first place.

Join me on a brief journey as we travel back and revisit the diary of a December Holiday in Hermanus:

  • Fought the traffic and made it. Whew, what a stunning setting for a coastal village. Hermanus is abuzz with the holiday vibe!
  • Our hotel (we are staying at Marine Square Luxury Apartments) is in a great location – walking distance to shops, restaurants and the cliff paths.
  • A quick spurt of last minute Xmas shopping, seems like I am not alone. Found a few Emergency Christmas Shopping gems.
  • Ahhh, the beach, kids playing, fresh ocean waves breaking, I may even brave a swim. (Got a bit roasted at Kammabaai, we never learn…)
  • Rented a Kayak from Euodia Adventures – even managed to catch 1 (ONE!) crayfish from Haardebaai – great way to get a bit of exercise while you hunt for dinner.
  • Had a brilliant lunch at Bientang’s Cave and a superb dinner at Rossis.
  • Drank cocktails and watched SA vs. England Cricket at Cubana – what a view!
  • Played boules on a quiet beach sipping a great local wine from the Wine Village.
  • Inspired us to visit Highlands Road Wine Estate in Elgin for an unforgettable afternoon of fishing in their dam, wine tasting and sampling their fantastic cuisine.
  • All this festive season excess means time for a visit to the gym – Proactive Fitness.
  • Mountains, beaches, shops, restaurants, world class accommodation, wine farms, mountain bike trails, pubs, markets, gyms, art galleries - Thanks Hermanus – I can’t wait to be back.
If you live in Hermanus, fortunate you, if you have been to Hermanus you will know what I mean, if you have never been – WHAT are you waiting for?

Good News for Seafood Lovers
Increasingly people eat wild caught seafood as a healthy and tasty alternative to land farmed proteins such as red meat. Fisheries are in a state of decline worldwide and many fish species have collapsed to such low numbers that they are disappearing from our plates forever. Scientists, organisations and some fishing industries are racing to help seafood stay on our plates through providing seafood consumers with a choice.

Enter The Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) who aims to inform and educate everyone involved in seafood, from wholesalers to restaurateurs through to seafood lovers. SASSI mainly aims to move consumer demand away from over-exploited fish species to more sustainable options. “Sustainable” means a level at which fish species can be fished without decreasing their numbers to such low levels that they disappear or struggles to maintain their numbers.

SASSI provides a fish list informing consumers on which seafood species are legal and more sustainable choices to pick when eating out or buying seafood. Green status species are the best choices as they can handle current fishing pressure better. Orange status species should be carefully considered as they are over-exploited, or from problematic fisheries. Red status species are illegal to sell in South Africa, and some are specially protected.

You can SMS the name of the fish you want to order or buy to 079-499-8795 for an answer of the status of the seafood you want to order or buy...

Pro Aactive Fitness
For those people whose new year's resolution is to lose weight, get healthy or get fit, Pro Active Fitness is the place to go. This cycle and fitness centre opened its doors in May 2009 and offers a wide range of fitness options to its members.

Pro Active Fitness is the baby of the incredibly dynamic and energetic couple Mathew and Michele Browne. Each one has their own individual talents, training and experience gained in South Africa and in the UK over the last 20 years which compliment each other and have made it possible to open and run such a successful fitness centre.

Mathew completed his degree in Human Movement Studies in Durban and thereafter spent 6 years in the UK working in various health clubs, introducing the first spinning classes and lecturing personal training courses at college. He was then approached by the owner of the Hermanus Health and Fitness to manage their gym, which he did for 7 years. But opening his own gym had always been a dream of his and with his 40th birthday looming in 2009 he decided the time was right to take the plunge. Everything fell perfectly into place and he hasn't looked back since.

Refine Anti Ageing & Laser Clinic
Hearing the words "Anti ageing" appeals to most people so the opening of the new Refine Anti Ageing and Laser Clinic piqued our curiosity. We spoke to Aesthetic practitioner Lindi Prinsloo, the owner of the new clinic in the Hemel and Aarde craft village to find out exactly what this means and what they offer, and for anyone who wants to recapture their youth and get beautiful skin without having to go under the knife – read on...!

Lindi is a real go-getter, she moved to Hermanus in November and within a month she and her boyfriend got married and she opened the clinic. She has a passion for her work which is evident when you meet her.

Lindi studied to be a beauty therapist in Pretoria and gained experience in Johannesburg before opening her own salon in Lydenberg. Thereafter she trained in London and worked on a cruise liner for a year. When she returned to South Africa she became more involved in aesthetics which is more para-medical than beauty therapy, dealing with laser treatment and skin renewal.
