Property: If I had a spare R10m...
With the property market seemingly finding its feet again after a tough few years (thanks in no small part to the global recession) we decided to talk to an expert on Hermanus property to get a feeling for the real (e)state of affairs in the local property world.
I asked Deon Esterhuyse of Aida a few questions like "If you had R10m spare lying around (dream a little…) how would you spend it on property in Hermanus?" The short answer: "I would buy a seafront property in the Onrus / Vermont area. Experience over the past 13 years has shown that these properties escalate by at least 25% per annum. There is only so much seafront." Read more Q & A with Deon from Aida.

Food and Drink: Dunn House Café
Anyone who doesn't know about Dunn House Café, located in the Beach House courtyard in High Street is missing out on one of Hermanus' little gems.
Owner and chef Lisa Dunn opened the café 7 months ago. She managed the Beach House Décor store for 2 years and when owner, Sally Barnard asked her to open a coffee shop on the premises, it was like a dream come true for Lisa. She has an infectious passion for what she does which is evident from her delicious meals.

The Feel Good Bit: Siyakha Community Educare Pre-School
A great success story is the story of the Siyakha Community Educare Pre-School and Outreach Programme. It’s a pre-school located in Zwelihle and is one of the projects of the Enlighten Education Trust . It was started as a result of the lack in Zwelihle of a place adhering to minimal standards where working parents could leave their children during the day. The original "Siyakha" was located at an RDP house which had to accommodate far more children that it could cope with.

The Blue Bit: Pirates and Dirty Fish
Seems the pirate stories we heard as children were not fairy stories after all. Increasingly fisheries management struggle to control illegal fishing activities that are not part of formal management structures. These activities are called IUU fishing - Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing. If fishers don’t report catches, this seafood cannot be included in calculations scientists make in order to know how much fish can be caught without causing fish populations to collapse or disappear forever, which makes sustainability estimates questionable.
If you suspect you are witnessing a fishing or marine crime, report it at: Cape Town to Stillbaai: 24 hour operation room situated in Hermanus: 028 313 2703
